GRAND CANYON RE-VISIT

View from Mather Point

I re-visited the Grand Canyon (for the 5th time) recently with a few family members and, as usual, this picturesque place did not fail to inspire awe. Aside from the tourists, the area was active with wild deer. On our way out of the park, I made a wrong turn into a parking lot where a small herd of deer hid just behind the foliage. At the forefront, was the dominant male, our excitement triggered a sudden evacuation of the vehicle and rushing directly towards the animal. The mission was to get a nice photo souvenir of this magnificent Stag before it gets camera shy. As everyone else approached head-on, I figured to go round back to get a closer picture. All of a sudden the Stag faced my direction and motioned to confront me. From a far, I can hear a man yelling "get out of there", I heeded the warning and got back in the van safely. Driving away it was re-confirmed with me that to "leave no trace" in nature is not just through picking up after yourself or avoiding taking objects or wild life. Keeping your distance from wild life is part of leaving no trace or impact in nature. Nature is truly beautiful and exciting, but we should never forget our responsibility to it and to ourselves in spite of our excitement and innocent curiosity.
